3 days in Egypt

Long weekends and city breaks, mostly Cairo.

What 3 days in Egypt really covers

Three or four days in Cairo is a city trip with pyramids attached. Most people spending 3 days in Egypt cover the Giza plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and a walk through Islamic Cairo. That is a full three days, not a light one. Cairo is enormous and the traffic is slow, so two main sights a day is a realistic pace.

The pyramids and the Sphinx take a morning, longer if you go inside one. The Grand Egyptian Museum deserves a half day on its own, and rushing it is a waste. Islamic Cairo, with Khan el-Khalili and the old mosques, is the part most visitors underrate. Add the older museum on Tahrir Square only if you are genuinely keen on the detail.

Day four: Saqqara, Dahshur, and the Luxor trip to skip

A fourth day is worth having. The usual use for it is Saqqara and Dahshur, south of the city, where the step pyramid and the Bent and Red pyramids sit in open desert. They are older than Giza and far quieter. Some people prefer them. If you would rather not spend another day on ruins, Coptic Cairo and a slower morning work too.

Now the part most sites will not tell you. Flying to Luxor and back in a day is a punishing way to spend one of three or four days. You leave before dawn, you queue at two airports, and you tour Karnak and the Valley of the Kings in the worst heat of the day. You land back late, tired, having seen Luxor badly. It is rarely worth it.

Luxor deserves two nights at least, ideally as part of a longer trip with a cruise or a train south. If you only have three or four days, keep them in Cairo and save Luxor for a second visit. A short trip done well beats a longer itinerary crammed into the same time.

Is a short Egypt break right for you?

Short trips suit three kinds of traveller. Stopovers, where you have a couple of days between flights and want to use them properly. Returning visitors who have already seen the Nile and want Cairo on its own terms. And first timers testing the water, deciding whether Egypt is a country they want to come back to for two weeks.

It suits fewer people than the listings suggest. If this is your one big trip and you have a week or more available, a short Cairo break will feel thin. The pyramids without the temples, the museum without the river. Egypt rewards the extra days more than most countries do. Book the short version when time is genuinely the constraint, not to save money.

Common questions

Is three days enough to see the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum?+

Yes, comfortably. Giza takes a morning and the Grand Egyptian Museum takes a half day, so you still have time for Islamic Cairo. What three days will not give you is a second run at anything. Pick one priority for each day and accept that you will leave things unseen. That is normal on a short trip.

Can I add a Nile cruise to a four day trip?+

No. A cruise between Luxor and Aswan usually runs three to seven nights, and you have to get down to Luxor and back from Aswan, by air or on the sleeper train. Four days cannot hold it. If a cruise is what you want, plan on eight days or more and treat Cairo as the shorter half. Compressing it means spending most of your trip in transit.

When is the best time for a short Cairo trip?+

October to April is the sensible window, when Cairo is warm rather than punishing. Summer in the city is bearable if you start early and stop at midday, and it is usually cheaper. Cairo in July is uncomfortable but survivable, unlike Luxor or Aswan. Fridays are quieter on the roads and busier at the mosques.
