What 5 days in Egypt really covers

5 days in Egypt is enough for one strong trip and not two. Most people arrive wanting the pyramids, the temples at Luxor and a few nights on the Nile. That plan looks fine on paper. On the ground it turns into a week of packing, airports and early alarms. Pick one shape and let the other go.

Two shapes work at this length. The first is Cairo plus a fast run south, usually to Luxor, flying both ways. The second is a short Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, with a night at one end. Both are real trips. Trying to combine them leaves you half a day in each place and no time to see anything twice.

Cairo and a fast run south, or a short Nile cruise?

The Cairo version gives you Giza, Saqqara and the museums, then a flight south for the temples and tombs around Luxor. You get the two things Egypt is best known for. What you lose is the river itself, which is the part most people talk about afterwards. Expect full days and a lot of time on your feet.

A short cruise trades Cairo for the Nile. Three or four nights between Luxor and Aswan covers Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu and Kom Ombo. A car transfer between the two cities stops at the same temples; the boat is just the comfortable way to string them together. You change place without packing and unpacking again, which makes it the calmer trip by some distance. Missing the pyramids feels wrong to plenty of people, and that is a fair reason to choose the other shape.

Which one suits you depends on what you would regret missing. First-time visitors with children usually prefer Cairo, because the pyramids are the thing everyone came for. Returning visitors, and anyone who wants to sit still occasionally, tend to get more out of the boat. Neither choice is a watered-down version of the other.

What you give up, and why the internal flight matters

At this length the internal flight stops being a luxury and becomes the thing that makes the trip work. Flying takes about an hour to Luxor, nearer an hour and a half to Aswan. The overnight train and the long drive both exist, and any saving is small and unreliable. Both eat a day you do not have. Fly, or shorten the plan.

Abu Simbel is the first casualty. It sits about three hours by road from Aswan, so a visit costs most of a day and often starts before dawn. On a five-day trip that day has to come from somewhere. Add a night to your dates and it becomes reasonable. Squeeze it in and you spend your holiday in a minibus.

Slow mornings go too. Five-day plans start early, because the heat builds through the day and the big sites fill up. Little room is left for a lie-in, a second coffee, or an afternoon that goes nowhere in particular. If that sounds like the wrong sort of holiday, six or seven days changes the trip more than you would expect.
