Why 8 days in Egypt works

Most Egypt itineraries land on eight days for a simple reason: it fits. 8 days in Egypt gives you two or three nights in Cairo, a short flight south, and a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Nothing is rushed to the point of pointlessness. You are not spending half the trip in transit, and you are not padding days to fill a fortnight.

The maths is straightforward. Two long-haul travel days sit at either end. That leaves roughly six days on the ground, and the cruise takes three or four of them. Cairo gets the rest: the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, a museum morning, and enough slack for one day lost to traffic. Add a day and you gain a site. Cut a day and something real gets dropped.

Direction matters more than most people expect. Cruises run either way between Luxor and Aswan, and the downstream leg from Aswan usually feels calmer. Either way you see Edfu and Kom Ombo, and Kom Ombo sits a few steps from the mooring. The boat also solves your hotel, your transfers and your evenings, which is why eight days on this route feels longer than eight days spent moving between hotels.

What eight days does not give you

Abu Simbel is the obvious casualty. It sits roughly three hours south of Aswan by road, so eight days usually means a pre-dawn start, an hour or two at the temples, and a long drive back. Flying cuts the time but adds cost. Neither version gives you the site at its best, which is early light with almost nobody there. If Abu Simbel is the reason you are going, build the trip around it instead.

The Red Sea is the other thing that will not fit. Hurghada and Marsa Alam are a flight or a long drive from the Nile valley, and two nights by the water is not a beach holiday. It is a travel day with a swim attached. The same goes for Alexandria, Sinai and the western desert. Eight days covers the pharaonic core of Egypt and nothing else. That is a fair trade, but know you are making it.

Is it worth adding two more days?

Ten days is the next honest step up, and it buys one of three things: Abu Simbel done properly, a few days on the Red Sea, or a slower Cairo. Pick one. Spreading two extra days across all three gives you more airports, not more Egypt. You have already paid for the flights; two more days on the ground is the cheaper half of the decision.

Eight days is enough if this is your first visit and you want the headline sites done well. Do not stretch it just because the itinerary looks short on paper. Egypt from October to April is comfortable; in June and July, Luxor and Aswan are punishing, and a longer trip in summer is a longer time in the heat. Shorter and better beats longer and hotter.
