Weather · El Gouna
El Gouna is sunny, dry and breezy all year. Highs run from 22C in January to 37C in July and August. The sea is 22C to 29C, and rain is very rare. Winter is mild with cool evenings. Summer is hot, with the warmest water and the strongest wind. The town sits about 20 minutes north of Hurghada, so the two share the same weather. Here is each season in numbers, plus wind, packing and the best months.
El Gouna has a hot desert climate cooled by the Red Sea. The chart shows the average high, low and sea temperature for each month. Air ranges from 22C in January to 37C in July and August. The sea ranges from 22C in February and March to 29C in August. There is no weather station in El Gouna itself, so the air figures come from Hurghada airport nearby.

Winter, December to February, is mild and sunny. Highs are 22C to 24C, with 9 hours of sun a day. Nights fall to 12C or 13C, so evenings feel cool.
Spring warms up fast. March reaches 26C, April 30C and May 34C. Nights rise from 15C to 23C.
Summer, June to August, is hot. Highs are 36C to 37C and nights stay at 26C to 28C. July gets 13 hours of sun a day.
Autumn eases off. September is 35C, October 32C and November 28C. The sea is still 26C to 28C, which makes autumn a good swimming season.
The open sea is coolest in February and March, at about 22C. It reaches 25C in May and 29C in August. October holds 27C and November 26C.
El Gouna gives you two kinds of water. The lagoons are calm, shallow and sheltered. The sea-front beaches have waves, wind and a proper swim.
You can swim in every month. From December to March many people find the sea fresh, and snorkellers often want a wetsuit.
Wind is the big weather story here. A northerly blows most days. At Hurghada airport the monthly average is 11 knots from November to February. It rises to 13 or 14 knots from May to September.
That is why the kite centres sit on the north beach. The bay faces the wind, and the water is flat and shallow over sand. For kiters, the wind is most reliable from spring to early autumn. Midwinter is a gamble, with some days of no wind at all.
For everyone else, the same wind cools the summer heat. It can also make spring beach days cool and gritty. Boat trips are the first to be cancelled on a strong day.
Rain is very rare, with about one rain day in March and in May. From late March into April, the khamsin can bring a hot, dusty wind for a day or two.
December to March: summer clothes, plus a jacket or jumper for the evening. A windproof layer helps on the beach and on boats.
April, May, October and November: light clothes, a thin layer for evenings and strong sun cream.
June to September: the lightest clothes you have, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream.
For a beach holiday, go in May, October or early November. Highs are 28C to 34C and the sea is 25C to 27C.
For kitesurfing, aim for May to September, when the wind is strongest. April and October are good too, with less heat.
For snorkelling and diving, September and October give 28C and 27C water.
For the lowest prices, go from May to September, when prices are low across Egypt. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks. The El Gouna Film Festival runs in October.
Yes, by day. The average high is 24C with about 9 hours of sun. Nights drop to 13C, so bring a jacket. The sea is about 24C.
July and August average 37C by day and 28C at night. June is 36C and September 35C. The breeze makes it easier on the beach.
August, at about 29C. July and September are about 28C. The coolest water is in February and March, at about 22C.
From May to September, when Hurghada airport averages 13 to 14 knots. Spring and early autumn are reliable too. Midwinter wind is patchy.
Almost never. The averages show about one rain day in March and one in May, and none in the other months.
Nearly. El Gouna is about 20 minutes north of Hurghada and shares the same air temperatures and wind. The sea figures are within a degree.
For most people, May or October. Highs are 32C to 34C and the sea is 25C to 27C. Kiters often prefer June to September.
