What is the weather like in Hurghada each season?
Winter, December to February, is mild. Highs are 22C to 24C and nights drop to 12C or 13C. You get 9 to 10 hours of sun a day. It feels warm in the sun and cool once it sets.
Spring warms fast. March reaches 26C, April 30C and May 34C. Nights climb from 15C to 23C. Sun rises to 10 or 11 hours a day.
Summer, June to August, is hot. Highs are 36C to 37C and nights stay at 26C to 28C. July has the most sun, at 13 hours a day.
Autumn cools gently. September is still 35C, October 32C and November 28C. The sea holds its summer warmth longer than the air, so autumn swims are warm.
Sea temperature and swimming in Hurghada
The sea is coolest in February and March, at about 22C. It warms to 25C in May and peaks at 29C in August. It is still 27C in October and 26C in November.
You can swim in every month. From December to March many people find the water fresh, and most divers and snorkellers want a thicker wetsuit. From June to October the water feels warm from the first step.
Giftun Island is the classic boat trip for snorkelling. Our Giftun Island page covers how the day works.
Wind, rain and dust in Hurghada
Hurghada is breezy all year. A northerly wind blows most days. At the airport the monthly average is 11 knots from November to February. It rises to 13 or 14 knots from May to September.
The breeze makes summer heat easier to bear. It also makes winter evenings feel cooler than the thermometer says. On strong days, offshore boat trips can be cancelled, so keep a spare day in your plans.
Rain is very rare. The averages round to zero rain days in every month. From late March into April, the khamsin can bring a hot, dusty wind for a day or two. It is hard to predict and usually passes quickly.
What to pack for Hurghada by season
December to March: summer clothes for the day, plus a jacket or warm jumper for the evening. If you plan to snorkel a lot, a thin wetsuit or rash vest helps.
April, May, October and November: light clothes, a thin layer for boat trips and evenings, and strong sun cream.
June to September: the lightest clothes you own, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream. Reef-safe sun cream and a rash vest protect you on long snorkel days.
