Month by month
Egypt in June
Cheapest month. The sea is superb; the Nile valley is brutal.
What Egypt in June is actually like
Egypt in June is the bottom of the market and it shows in the price of everything — boats, hotels, guides. If budget is the deciding factor and you can organise your days around the heat, it is a genuine opportunity.
Forty-one degrees in Luxor is not a number to shrug at. Tombs have no airflow and hold the heat. Guides will start you at first light and have you back indoors by eleven, which works, but it is a different kind of trip.
On the Red Sea, June is close to ideal: 29C water, long days, and hotels half empty.
What Egypt in June is good for
- ▲The Red Sea, straightforwardly. Water at 29C, empty resorts and low prices.
- ▲Wreck and reef diving, with the best visibility of the year on many sites.
- ▲Cairo as a short city break, where the museums and mosques are indoor and the prices are at their floor.
One thing to plan for
If you do go inland, insist on a 5am start. A guide who suggests a nine o'clock departure for the Valley of the Kings in June is not doing you a favour.
