Is January a good time to visit Hurghada?

January suits people who want sun without heat. At 22C you can walk the marina or the old quarter of Dahar at any hour.

It works best as the beach end of a Nile trip. Luxor averages about 23C this month, which is ideal temple weather.

For a pure beach week it is a weaker pick. The sun feels warm on a lounger, but the shade is cool and evenings are chilly.

Can you swim in Hurghada in January?

Yes. The sea averages about 23C in January, based on ten years of readings. That is a degree warmer than February and March, the coolest months.

Most people find it fresh for the first few minutes. Snorkellers and divers usually want a thicker wetsuit from December to March.

There is a reward for the chill. The water is at its clearest in winter, so the reefs around Giftun look sharp.

Is Hurghada windy in January?

January is one of the calmer months. Windfinder's Hurghada airport records from 2000 to 2026 average about 11 knots in January. Midsummer averages about 14.

Calmer weeks help boat trips. The Giftun snorkel day and the two-hour run to the Abu Nuhas wrecks are less likely to be called off.

Wind on a boat deck feels colder than the number suggests. Take a windproof layer for the ride back.

Kitesurfers should know that some winter days are too light to ride. Pick a longer stay to catch the windy ones.

Crowds, prices and holidays in Hurghada in January

January is peak season across Egypt. Our month data rates it very busy, with peak prices. The temples drive that more than the beach does.

The first days carry on the New Year rush. Coptic Christmas on 7 January is a public holiday. So is 25 January, Revolution Day and National Police Day.

The Cabinet often moves a holiday to a Thursday, so the day off can shift. In the resorts, neither date changes much for a visitor.

If your dates touch New Year, book early. It is one of the two priciest weeks of the year.

What to pack for Hurghada in January

Pack for warm days and cold evenings. Light clothes and sunscreen cover the daytime, because nine hours of sun still burns.

Add a fleece or a light jacket and long trousers. Nights average about 12C, and boat decks are colder.

If you plan to snorkel or dive a lot, bring or hire a thicker wetsuit. A thin one gets cold on a long dive.

Day trips from Hurghada in January: Luxor and Cairo

January is one of the best months for a trip to Luxor. Highs there average about 23C, and the drive takes about four hours.

That makes a long day, so leave early. A night or two in Luxor makes the temples far more relaxed.

Cairo averages about 19C in January. It is about 460 km by road, over five hours, so most people fly.

Our Cairo, Luxor and the Red Sea tour covers all three in eight days. It runs from US$2,040 per person, with two nights in Hurghada.

Hurghada in January compared with December and February

December is a little warmer, with a 24C high and a 25C sea. Its last week is the priciest of the year.

February is much the same on land, at 23C, with an extra hour of sun. The sea drops to about 22C.

Wind is the same in all three months, at about 11 knots. Choose December for warmer water, or February for lower prices outside half-term.
