Cairo to Petra tour: seven days in Egypt and Jordan, day by day

The Cairo to Petra tour we can book is a seven-day private trip run by our Egyptian partner, Memphis Tours. It spends three nights in Cairo and three in Amman. You see Giza, Saqqara and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then fly to Jordan for Mount Nebo, Madaba, the Dead Sea and Petra. The trip ends in Amman, so you fly home from Jordan. The Cairo to Amman flight is extra. Below are the day plan, what is included and excluded, and how to get a current price, which is confirmed on enquiry.

What this Egypt and Petra tour is

This is the route Memphis Tours runs under the name Egypt and Petra Tour. It lasts seven days and six nights and covers two countries. It is a private tour, with transfers in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Memphis Tours lists it as running every day, so you pick the start date.

This page follows Memphis Tours' published plan for this trip, dated March 2026. Treat it as the plan to discuss, and confirm each point when you enquire.

Our 16 fixed tours all stay inside Egypt. This trip is booked through the enquiry form on this page.

The Cairo to Petra tour, day by day

Day 1, arrive in Cairo. A Memphis Tours representative meets you at Cairo International Airport and helps you through arrival. You transfer to your hotel and go over the plan for the week. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 2, Giza and Saqqara. Your guide takes you to the Giza plateau for the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. After lunch at an Egyptian restaurant, you drive to Saqqara. There you see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, generally regarded as the oldest large stone building in the world. Breakfast and lunch are included.

Day 3, the Grand Egyptian Museum. The day starts at the museum, about two kilometres from the pyramids. It shows the Tutankhamun collection together in one place. Lunch follows at an Egyptian restaurant. The inclusions list also names Old Cairo for this excursion, while the day plan names only the museum. Ask whether Old Cairo is part of day 3.

Day 4, fly from Cairo to Amman. After breakfast you transfer to Cairo airport. The flight to Amman takes about an hour and a half, and its fare is extra. At Queen Alia Airport a representative meets you and helps with immigration and customs. You then transfer to your Amman hotel for three nights.

Day 5, Mount Nebo, Madaba and the Dead Sea. You drive first to Mount Nebo, where tradition says Moses looked out over the Promised Land. The view takes in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Next comes Madaba, for the sixth-century mosaic map in St George's Church. Then you drive to the Dead Sea, with time to float and try the mud. You return to Amman for the night.

Day 6, Petra. A driver takes you south from Amman. Memphis Tours puts the drive at about two and a half hours. Petra's official site, visitpetra.jo, gives about three hours on the Desert Highway. At Petra a local guide shows you the main sights for about three hours, and a short horse ride is included. You then drive back to Amman. Expect five to six hours on the road that day.

Day 7, fly home from Amman. After breakfast you transfer to Queen Alia Airport for your flight home.

What is included

The published plan lists these as included. A representative meets you at the airport in both countries. Every transfer is in a private air-conditioned vehicle. You get three hotel nights in Cairo and three in Amman, each with breakfast. No dinners are listed, so budget for them.

Lunch is included on the four touring days: days 2, 3, 5 and 6. Bottled water comes in the vehicle in Egypt. Entrance fees to the sights in Cairo, Giza, Petra and Amman are covered, and so are service charges and taxes.

Guiding changes from day to day. An English-speaking guide leads the Cairo and Giza days. At Petra you have a local guide for about three hours. On day 5 the page lists an English-speaking driver and no guide. If you want the Madaba map explained, ask for a guide that day. Ask too whether Dead Sea beach access is in the price.

What you pay for separately

Five things sit outside the price. The first is your international flights. The second is the Cairo to Amman flight on day 4. The third is the entry visas for Egypt and Jordan. The fourth is tips for guides. The last is personal spending and any optional excursions.

Book your international ticket into Cairo and home from Amman. Ask Memphis Tours whether they can add the Cairo to Amman flight to the booking, or whether you buy it yourself. Either way, check EgyptAir and Royal Jordanian for times on your date. Our tipping guide covers what is normal in Egypt.

How much does the Egypt and Petra tour cost?

The current price is confirmed on enquiry. The prices in the published plan were valid until 30 September 2026, so they have expired. We do not print them here.

The March 2026 plan priced the trip per person, in US dollars. Three things set the price: the hotel level, the season and how many people share a room. It offered two hotel levels and quoted single, double and triple rooms. Christmas, New Year and Easter were priced on request. Children sharing their parents' room had separate rates.

For a firm quote, send your dates, the number of travellers and the hotel level you want. Ask for the price with and without the Cairo to Amman flight.

Visas, Petra tickets and the Jordan Pass on this route

Egypt first. This route enters Egypt once, because it ends in Amman, so a single-entry visa covers it. The official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, lists the single-entry e-visa at US$30 (checked October 2026). Our visa page compares the e-visa with a visa on arrival.

Jordan next. The tour excludes the Jordanian visa. The Jordan Pass waives the 40 JD visa fee if you buy it before you arrive and stay at least two nights (three days). This route has three nights in Jordan, so it meets that rule. The Wanderer pass costs 70 JD and includes one day at Petra. Check your nationality on jordanpass.jo before you rely on it (checked October 2026).

Petra charges day visitors who do not stay overnight in Jordan 90 JD. With a night in Jordan, one day costs 50 JD. You sleep in Amman on this route, so the 50 JD rate applies. Source: visitpetra.jo, checked October 2026.

The tour already lists Petra entry as included. A Jordan Pass bought for the visa waiver would give you a second Petra ticket. Ask Memphis Tours whether they adjust the price for pass holders.

Who this route suits

It suits a first visit with one week, where Giza and Petra are the two sights that matter most. Ending in Amman saves a day of travel back to Cairo. As a private tour, it runs on your dates.

Luxor, Aswan, the Nile, Abu Simbel and Wadi Rum are all outside this plan. Our Egypt and Jordan tours page recommends 12 to 16 days for both countries, and our Egypt and Jordan itinerary sets out 10- to 16-day versions. This week-long route is the short version: Giza and Petra, with less time for anything else.

Petra gets one day here, from Amman, with a long drive at each end. The itinerary page explains how to plan more time there. If you want a night near Petra, ask for it when you enquire.

Planning Cairo to Petra on your own?

Our Cairo to Petra guide covers the flights, the roads and the buses for travelling on your own. Egypt to Jordan compares the flight, the ferry and the land route through Israel. This tour uses the flight from Cairo to Amman, the simplest of the three.

Official travel advice for Jordan and Egypt

Read the official advice before you book, and again before you fly. The UK FCDO's Jordan page was last updated on 10 September 2026, when we checked in October 2026. The page covers regional tensions, including possible flight cancellations and airspace closures, which matter on a trip with a flight between two countries.

Read the FCDO's Egypt page too, and the US State Department pages for Egypt and Jordan at travel.state.gov. Follow the advice for each place on your route.

How to book the Cairo and Petra tour

Use the enquiry form on this page. Tell us your dates, how many are travelling and the hotel level you want. Say whether you want the Cairo to Amman flight included. The plan comes back with a current price.

Ask the open questions at the same time: Old Cairo on day 3, a guide on day 5, Dead Sea beach access, and the Petra ticket if you hold a Jordan Pass.

Common questions

Can I start in Amman and finish in Cairo?+

Ask when you enquire. The published plan runs Cairo first. Either way round, you enter each country once. That keeps the visas simple.

How much walking does the Petra day involve?+

Quite a lot. The tour plan gives about 700 metres from the visitor centre to the Siq, the gorge into Petra. The Siq itself runs about 1.2 kilometres to the Treasury. You walk back out the same way. Wear shoes with good grip.

What should I bring for the Dead Sea stop?+

Swimwear and a change of clothes. The plan includes time to float and try the mud before the drive back to Amman. Ask whether showers and beach access are covered.

Can I see Petra by Night on this tour?+

Not as planned, because you drive back to Amman the same day. Petra by Night also needs its own ticket on top of a daytime one, according to visitpetra.jo. Ask for a night near Petra if you want it.

Can I add a second day at Petra?+

Ask when you enquire. For visitors staying in Jordan, a two-day ticket costs 55 JD, used on consecutive days (visitpetra.jo, checked October 2026). Our Egypt and Jordan itinerary shows how to fit it in.

Which hotels does the tour use?+

The published plan offered two hotel levels, each with named hotels in Cairo and Amman. Hotels can change between seasons. Ask which ones apply to your dates before you book.
