Getting around
Luxor to Hurghada is about 290 kilometres by road, and the drive takes roughly four hours with a short stop. Every tour we sell that joins the Nile to the Red Sea makes this trip. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle after a morning of sightseeing in Luxor, and reach the coast in time for dinner. Coming the other way, the Hurghada to Luxor day trip is covered below.
Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada
A night or more in Luxor| Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada | A night or more in Luxor | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the road | About eight hours, four each way | About four hours each way, on different days |
| Time at the sites | A few hours, squeezed between two drives | A full day or more, at the hours you choose |
| When you see the temples | Late morning and midday, in the heat and with the coach groups | Early morning on the west bank, late afternoon at Karnak |
| Start time | Before dawn | After breakfast |
| What you can fit in | The west bank highlights and Karnak, at speed | Both banks properly, plus Luxor Temple after dark |
| Extra cost | None beyond the excursion | One or more hotel nights |
| Best for | A beach holiday with one free day and no other chance | Anyone who came to Egypt partly for the temples |
The short answer
Stay at least one night in Luxor if you can. The day trip works. Eight hours of driving leaves only a short, hot visit. One hotel night turns it into a proper look at both banks.
The drive is about 290 kilometres. OpenStreetMap route data puts the driving time at about three and a half hours from Luxor (checked October 2026). Coming back takes a little longer. Add a stop and some town traffic at each end, and four hours is a fair plan.
The route has three parts. First, north along the Nile valley to Qena, through farmland and villages. Then east on the Qena to Safaga road, across the Eastern Desert. Last, north along the Red Sea coast from Safaga to Hurghada. The desert stretch is the longest and the emptiest.
The drive is dull. There is little to see once you leave the valley, and most people sleep through the desert part. Plan it as a gap between two good things. It is the price of having temples and a beach on one trip.
Our tours drive this leg. The road transfer is in the price on every tour below, so there is nothing extra to book.
To compare flying, check EgyptAir for your dates. Count the whole journey: the airport run, check-in, any change of plane in Cairo and the transfer at the far end. Set that against about four hours by road.
Travelling on your own, ask your Luxor hotel to arrange a car. Agree the price before you set off.
On four of the five tours the day runs the same way. Breakfast, then the east bank: Karnak and Luxor Temple in the morning. On the 8-day tour, lunch in Luxor comes next. Then the private transfer to your Hurghada hotel, where dinner is included. The drive takes roughly four hours.
The temples come first for a reason. You see them in the cooler part of the day, and all the sightseeing is done before you get in the car. On the 10, 11 and 13-day tours you leave the boat that morning. On the 16-day tour you leave from a Luxor hotel after a morning on the west bank.
A hot air balloon over the west bank is offered that morning as a paid extra on most of these tours. It means a very early start before a long day. Our page on the Luxor balloon covers whether it is worth it.
None of our tours drive back to Luxor. After the free days on the coast, you take a flight from Hurghada to Cairo, which is also in the price. That saves a second long drive.
We sell five tours that drive from Luxor to Hurghada. All prices are from-prices per person in US$, land only, on the standard plan. International flights are extra.
Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada in 8 days, from US$2,040. There is no boat. You fly from Cairo to Luxor, spend one night there for both banks, then drive to the coast for two nights. Be clear about what that is: a short stop at the sea after the temples. One free day and a free morning is enough to swim and rest. It is too short to call a beach holiday.
A Nile cruise and Hurghada in 10 days, from US$2,310. Two days in Cairo, three nights sailing from Aswan to Luxor, then three nights at Hurghada with nothing booked. This is the clearest version of the temples-then-sea trip, and the one we would suggest to most first-time visitors who want both.
Cairo, a Nile cruise and Hurghada in 11 days, from US$2,560. The same route as the 10-day trip, plus a final day in Cairo for the Royal Mummies, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo. Take it if those Cairo sights matter to you.
Cairo, a Nile cruise and Hurghada in 13 days, from US$2,945. More time in Cairo, a night in Aswan before the boat, three nights on the river and three at Hurghada. The pace is slower on both ends.
The grand tour of Egypt in 16 days, from US$3,910. After the cruise you spend two more days in Luxor on land, including Dendera and Abydos. On the last Luxor morning you see the Valley of the Queens, Medinet Habu and the Ramesseum, then drive to the coast. This is the one for people who want Luxor done thoroughly before the beach.
Many people searching for Hurghada to Luxor are on a beach holiday and want one day of temples. The day trip is a standard excursion from Hurghada. It means a pre-dawn start and around four hours on the road each way. You get a few hours at the sites in the middle of the day.
In that time you can see the west bank highlights and Karnak, at speed. You will be at the tombs and temples in the heat, at the same time as other coaches from the coast. It works if it is your only chance. It is a poor fit for young children, and for anyone who wants time to look properly.
The better plan is to stay one or two nights in Luxor. You reach the Valley of the Kings early, see Karnak in the late afternoon, and walk round Luxor Temple after dark. Our page on things to do in Hurghada covers the day trip from the coast side, along with the reefs and islands.
Take water and something to eat, a layer for the air-conditioning, and a charged phone. Ask your driver about a stop before you leave.
For safety, read the current travel advice before you go. The US State Department and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office both publish Egypt pages, and they are updated when things change. Check what your travel insurance requires too. Our page on whether Hurghada is safe covers the coast itself.

About 290 kilometres by road, according to OpenStreetMap route data checked October 2026. The route runs north along the Nile to Qena, east across the desert to Safaga, then north up the coast to Hurghada.
Roughly four hours with a short stop. The driving time is about three and three-quarter hours from Hurghada, and a little less from Luxor. That is from OpenStreetMap route data, checked October 2026.
Yes. It is a standard excursion from Hurghada, with around eight hours of driving and a pre-dawn start. You see the west bank highlights and Karnak in the heat of the day. One night in Luxor makes it a much better visit.
They drive. The private transfer is in the price on all five tours. To compare flying, check EgyptAir for your dates and count airport time and any change in Cairo.
Yes, on all five tours that make the trip. It is a private air-conditioned transfer after a morning of sightseeing in Luxor. The flight from Hurghada back to Cairo at the end of the beach days is included too.
Luxor first. You do the walking and the heat while you are fresh, and the beach days come when you need them. All our tours that combine the two run in that order.
Two nights covers both banks without rushing. One night still gets you the west bank early and Karnak in the afternoon. Our page on things to do in Luxor covers each site and gives two day plans that work.
Read the current Egypt pages from the US State Department and the UK FCDO before you travel. They hold the latest advice and change when conditions change. Our tours use a private vehicle and driver for this transfer.
