Cairo nightlife: what a night out in Cairo looks like

Cairo stays up late, but most of its nightlife has nothing to do with drinking. Egyptians go out to eat, sit in coffee houses, walk by the Nile and listen to music, often until well after midnight. For a drink, head to hotel bars, Zamalek and licensed places Downtown. For a show, book the Opera House, El Sawy Culturewheel or a live music club. Use a ride-hailing app to get home.

Is there nightlife in Cairo?

Yes, plenty. Cairo keeps late hours. Families eat dinner late, cafes fill after dark and the bridges over the Nile are busy until midnight.

Most of that night life is social and sober. Coffee houses, juice bars, restaurants and walks by the river come first. Bars and clubs exist, but they are a smaller scene, centred on Zamalek, the big hotels and a few licensed places Downtown.

So plan by mood. For a drink, stay in licensed places. For music, book a venue. For the city itself, go where Cairenes go after dark.

Bars in Zamalek, Downtown and the hotels

Zamalek, on the island in the Nile, is the easiest area for a relaxed drink. It has many of the city's good restaurants, some of which serve alcohol, and dress is relaxed.

Downtown has a handful of older licensed bars and plenty of cheap cafes. It is louder, and dress on the street is more conservative than in Zamalek.

The big hotels all have bars, and hotel rooftops give the best views. In Giza, several rooftops face the pyramids, and they are popular at sunset. Bars open and close often, so check a place's own page before you go.

Live music: Cairo Jazz Club and El Sawy Culturewheel

Cairo Jazz Club in Agouza has run live music and club nights since 2001. Its house rules are strict. You must reserve, entry is for couples and mixed groups only, and the minimum age is 23.

Bring a paper copy of your ID. Sportswear and slippers are not allowed. Reservations are held until 9:30pm, and the door staff can refuse entry.

El Sawy Culturewheel sits at the end of 26th of July Street in Zamalek. Its programme mixes concerts, stand-up comedy and theatre. Check the calendar on its website.

The Cairo Opera House and the Tannoura show

The Cairo Opera House stands on Gezira island, next to Zamalek. Its stages host orchestra concerts, Arabic music and recitals on most evenings. In November 2026, its programme included the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and a night of Umm Kulthum songs.

You can book on the Opera House website. It is also home to the Cairo International Film Festival, from 11 to 20 November 2026.

The tannoura is a whirling dance in wide, coloured skirts, drawn from Sufi tradition. The Heritage Tannoura Troupe performs at the Al-Ghouri complex on Al-Azhar Street, near Khan el-Khalili. Shows run in the evening. Check the next date before you go, because the schedule changes.

Coffee houses, Khan el-Khalili and the Nile at night

The ahwa, or coffee house, is the heart of a Cairo evening. People sit for hours over tea, coffee and a shisha pipe, and the backgammon boards come out. Nobody minds a visitor sitting down.

Khan el-Khalili is busy late, and the coffee houses around it are full after dark. There is no metro to the door, so most people take a taxi or an app ride to Midan Hussein.

On the river, you can hire a felucca for an hour at sunset, or walk the Nile bridges with everyone else. Nile dinner cruises are popular too. They sell the view more than the cooking, so eat for the setting.

Is the sound and light show at Giza worth it?

The show lights up the pyramids and the Sphinx after dark, with a recorded story told over loudspeakers. The official site lists tickets at US$20 for adults and US$11 for children aged 6 to 12.

We think it feels dated, and we would not plan an evening around it. The pyramids are far better by daylight, at opening time. If you are staying in Giza, a hotel rooftop gives you an evening view of the pyramids instead.

Alcohol rules for a night out

You can drink in licensed restaurants and bars, in hotels and in private homes. UK government advice says drinking anywhere else is illegal and can lead to arrest. Do not walk the street with a can or bottle.

Public drunkenness goes down badly everywhere in Egypt. Keep your evening inside the places built for it. Imported drinks carry heavy duty, so local beer is the cheap choice.

Never drive after drinking. It is a serious offence that can bring a fine and prison. Our page on alcohol in Egypt has the full rules.

Cairo nightlife in Ramadan

Ramadan in 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to 9 March. The days are quiet, but the evenings are the liveliest of the year. After the sunset meal, the streets fill and stay busy until very late.

Khan el-Khalili is at its busiest after sunset. Alcohol is harder to find during the month, though hotels and licensed restaurants still serve it. Dress a little more modestly while your hosts are fasting.

What to wear and how to get home

In Zamalek and in hotel bars, smart casual works, and bare shoulders draw no comment. Downtown and around Khan el-Khalili, cover shoulders and knees. Cairo Jazz Club turns away sportswear and slippers.

Use Uber or Careem to get home. Both work widely in Cairo, the fare is fixed before you get in and the route is recorded. A local SIM card or eSIM makes this easy.
