Where to stay in Giza: by the pyramids or by the Nile
Stay near the pyramids in Giza if the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara fill your days. You reach the plateau at opening, ahead of the coaches. Stay on the Giza riverside, by the Nile, if you also want central Cairo within easy reach. Giza is a big city that runs from the river to the desert, so a Giza address can be a long way from the pyramids. For most trips, one or two nights by the plateau is enough.

The short answer
Stay by the pyramids for one or two nights when Giza, the museum and Saqqara fill your days. For a longer trip, sleep in central Cairo or on the Giza riverside and drive out to the plateau early. Our where to stay in Cairo guide covers Zamalek and Downtown.
Is Giza the same as Cairo?
Giza is part of Greater Cairo, on the west bank of the Nile. In law it is a separate governorate. On the ground it is one city with Cairo.
Giza runs from the river all the way to the desert. The pyramid plateau sits at its far edge, where the buildings stop. That is why a hotel with a Giza address may sit by the Nile, near the zoo, a long way from the pyramids. Check the map before you count on a pyramid view.
Staying near the pyramids
The pyramids area is the town of Nazlet el-Samman and the approach road to the plateau. Hotels and rooftop restaurants along that road face the pyramids, and several are popular at sunset. The view is real but distant, framed by buildings and cables.
The gain is the opening hour. You can be at the gate before the coach groups and the heat arrive, which is the best time to see the pyramids. The Grand Egyptian Museum is about two kilometres away, so it becomes an easy half day.
The cost is everything else. There is little to walk to after dark. Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili are across the river, a long drive at most hours.
Staying on the Giza riverside
The other side of Giza is the river. Along the Nile, Giza faces central Cairo across the water, near the zoo and the botanical gardens.
A riverside hotel puts you closer to the old city, the museums in the centre and the restaurants of Zamalek. The pyramids are a drive across Giza. Go early, when the roads are clearest.
This is a good middle choice for a stay of three or more nights. You can reach both halves of the city without changing hotels.
Saqqara, Dahshur and the Grand Egyptian Museum from Giza
Giza is the best base for the sites south along the desert edge. Saqqara is about 40 minutes south of Giza, and Dahshur is about 20 minutes further on. Both make a good day with the pyramids area as your base.
Do not try the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids in the same afternoon. The museum needs three hours at least. From a hotel near the plateau, you can give each its own morning.
The Giza hotel our partner's tours use
We sell the tours of one Egyptian operator, Memphis Tours. Its Cairo nights use three hotels, and one of them is in Giza. Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence is on the west bank of the Nile, at 35 Giza Street. Its own pages describe views over the zoo and the botanical gardens, with the Great Pyramid in the distance.
It is a riverside hotel, a drive from the plateau. The partner uses no hotel by the pyramids. The other two Cairo hotels are in Zamalek and Downtown.
On these trips your guide collects you each morning, so the district matters less. The Cairo Short Break, five days, starts at US$935 per person, land only. Cairo and Luxor, five days, starts at US$1,480.
How many nights to stay in Giza
One or two nights near the pyramids is enough for most trips. That covers the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara with early starts.
With three or more nights in Cairo, split the stay. Spend the Giza nights by the plateau, then move to Zamalek or Downtown for the old city. The move costs one transfer, and every day after it starts on the right side of the river.
Cairo International Airport is about an hour from Giza in normal traffic. Allow more at busy times.
Common questions
Is it better to stay in Giza or Cairo?+
Stay in Giza for one or two nights if the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara are most of your plan. Stay in central Cairo, in Zamalek or Downtown, for the old city, food and longer stays. With three or more nights, do both.
Is it worth staying near the pyramids?+
Yes, for one or two nights. You reach the plateau at opening, ahead of the heat and the coaches. There is little to do after dark, and the rest of Cairo is a long drive away.
Can you see the pyramids from your hotel in Giza?+
From some hotels and rooftops along the approach road, yes. The view is real but distant, framed by buildings and cables. A Giza address alone does not promise a view, as Giza runs all the way to the river.
How far are the pyramids from central Cairo?+
Giza to Downtown is roughly 20 km. Allow about half an hour early in the morning and up to most of two hours at busy times.
How far is the Grand Egyptian Museum from the pyramids?+
About two kilometres from the plateau. From a hotel near the pyramids, it is an easy half day. Give it at least three hours.
Which Giza hotel do your tours use?+
Memphis Tours, the operator whose tours we sell, uses Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence, on the Giza bank of the Nile. It is one of three Cairo options, depending on the accommodation level you choose.
Is it safe to stay in Giza?+
For current advice, read the US State Department and UK FCDO travel pages for Egypt before you book. In practical terms, expect persistent selling around the plateau, and agree prices for camel and horse rides first.
